Career

Debbie Speight is undertaking pupillage under the supervision of Lucy Brown and Michael Morley specialising in Crime.

Prior to commencing pupillage, Debbie worked for the Local Authority in various support and enforcement roles for over seventeen years.

Debbie closely supported clients from diverse social and economic backgrounds to sustain their tenancies and became well experienced in supporting those with vulnerabilities including addiction and mental health. Debbie’s approachable demeanour meant she was often the first point of call for clients facing financial difficulties or suffering issues such as hoarding, domestic abuse and cuckooing. Her ability to prioritise and exercise sound judgement was evidenced as she co-ordinated multiple cross agency action plans to tackle and safeguard against an array of environmental and anti-social behaviour issues. Debbie also conducted housing fraud investigations and worked closely with the council’s legal department to prepare cases for criminal prosecutions and civil proceedings, developing extensive investigative and analytical skills.

Immediately prior to commencing pupillage, Debbie gained first-hand experience of the Criminal Justice System employed as a defence specialist caseworker preparing rape and sexual offence cases for trial. Much of her time was spent in the Crown Court assisting barristers and supporting clients through the trial process. Debbie’s ability to respond confidently to the disclosure of sensitive information and communicate complex information delicately yet directly was continuously acknowledged. Her high standards of working and attention to detail were praised by her colleagues, her clients and barristers alike.

Having participated in mentorship programmes, marshalling and multiple mini-pupillages across leading sets on the North Eastern circuit, she received praise for her contributions and commitment to the bar. Keen to pay forward the support she has received, Debbie has delivered advice on successfully attaining scholarships at university talks and has lectured undergrad law at Leeds Beckett University in her bid to encourage and support the aspirations of future lawyers. Debbie looks forward to providing support and mentorship to others as she progresses in her career as a barrister.
