London Bar > Personal injury, industrial disease and insurance fraud Tier 1
The ‘excellent’ Deka Chambers has a strong reputation for its ‘high-quality barristers with experience in the field.’ Giles Mooney KC has acted on standout catastrophic injury work, namely for the claimant on the 2021 Court of Appeal case Ford v Seymour-Williams, which shows his niche expertise in matters involving the Animals Act 1971; additional notable work includes his action for claimants involved in Croydon tram crash, a matter involving particular points on prosthetics. From the 1 Chancery Lane side of the merger, Simon Readhead KC, described as having a ‘genuine star quality’, has handled impressive work on fatal and serious injury matters, often involving psychiatric factors, and Matthew Chapman KC is active in catastrophic injury cases, which are often international in scope and feature complex causation issues.Leading Silks

London Bar > Travel law (including jurisdictional issues) Tier 1
Deka Chambers‘s travel team assists both claimants and defendants in overseas accident litigation and in recovery actions against overseas suppliers. The team counts on the expertise of John Ross KC, whose work includes leading cases on the subject of cross-border personal injury claims, and Sarah Prager, who is acting in a number of High Court trials and has three cases on jurisdictional matters going through the Court of Appeal. From the 9 Gough Square side of the chambers pre-merger, Grahame Aldous KC recently acted in Booth v Phillips, a High Court case which established the jurisdiction of the UK over deaths abroad leaving a dependent in the UK. Giles Mooney KC is acting for the defendant in a case where the claimant was injured whilst acting as a yacht’s engineer in the course of racing during an international regatta; it is alleged that the claimant has suffered serious brain injuries and the case is currently pleaded in excess of £3m.Rising stars

Deka Chambers, formed from the merger of 9 Gough Chambers and 1 Chancery Lane is known for its ‘counsel of excellent calibre’ as well as its ‘breadth and depth of experience and talent’, work amongst those in the set ranging from misdiagnoses to complex catastrophic cases. Stuart Mckechnie KC has a growing reputation in complex brain and birth injury work, notably successfully settling IXM (A Minor) v Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals NHS for the claimant for a proposed £33.2m, which, if approved, would be one of the largest ever settlements in this practice area in England and Wales; the case involves a birth injury which led to multi-factorial issues of severe brain injury, hypothalamic damage and intractable epilepsy, which have resulted in the claimant’s need for constant care. In addition, amongst the juniors, ‘excellent advocate’ Adam Dawson has done impressive work on fatal cases, whilst Abigail Stamp is active in high-value neurological and surgical cases. From the 1 Chancery Lane side of the merger, Edward Bishop KC and Susanna Bennett, were involved in Traylor and Traylor v Kent and Medway NHS Social Care Partnership Trust, a case concerning complex mental health factors.Rising stars
