MMAKS Advocates is a leading full-service law firm in Uganda with a long standing reputation of quality and excellence. It is one of the largest firms in Uganda, with 29 proficiently trained lawyers and a staff complement of 35. Two of its partners are qualified as solicitors of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.

MMAKS combines a well-established litigation and commercial transactional practice. The MMAKS team specializes in the areas of commercial and corporate advisory, property, banking and finance, litigation, dispute resolution and intellectual property.

The corporate team has a proven track record in structuring innovative and commercially sound transactions for local and international investors and businesses in the areas of energy, oil and gas, projects, infrastructure, mergers, acquisitions, general corporate among others. MMAKS was involved in the negotiation of the project framework agreement for the construction of Uganda’s first ever oil refinery. It has advised on a number of financings by FMO and PROPARCO, and has an impressive debt recovery portfolio

The property, banking and finance team is specialised in areas of banking, project finance, infrastructure, power and energy, fintech and  real estate. The team has handled the largest financing deals in both hydro and solar energy under the GefFit Programme in Uganda. The team is on the panel of most leading commercial banks in Uganda for example Absa Bank Uganda Limited, DFCU  Bank, KCB Bank and Diamond Trust Bank Uganda Limited. It also works closely with  magic circle firms across the globe  and development finance institutions like Nederlandse Financierings-Maatschappij Voor Ontwikkelingslanden N.V (FMO),  Societe De Promotion Et De Participation Pour La Cooperation Economique SA (PROPARCO) and FINNFUND.

The litigation team advises on ground-breaking cases in the areas of contract, enforcement, commercial and criminal litigation, corporate debt recoveries, banking and finance, realization of securities, real estate and intellectual property among others.    It has been involved in groundbreaking cases that have greatly shaped Uganda’s legal landscape. The team advises the Central Bank of Uganda together with several leading commercial banks in the country like Absa Bank,  KCB Bank, DFCU Bank and Diamond Trust Bank etc. The team also has a huge debt recovery portfolio covering the key commercial banks in Uganda. The team has also handled land mark cases litigation cases in the country which have greatly shaped the legal landscape in the country. Key among these are cases relating to taxation, enforcement of foreign judgments and the liquidation of financial institutions.
