Competition and antitrust Tier 3

The hire by Contreras Velozo of leading figure  Javier Velozo, 'who has great experience' and the 'young but impressivePablo Pardo from Aninat Schwencke & Cia in 2018 to launch its competition and regulation department has immediately put the firm on the map in this sector. The antitrust practice 'provides interdisciplinary advice, including both legal and economic analyses and proposed solutions, in a short time'; it spans collusion, abuse of dominance, non-contentious proceedings and follow-on damages litigation as well as merger control matters. Recent work includes acting for Eukor Car Carriers in a global cartel case; key client Telefonica (Movistar) in abuse-of-dominance cases brought by mobile virtual network operators and spectrum-related issues, among other matters; and Embotelladora Andina in an excessive pricing lawsuit. Associate Valentina Chinni, who arrived with Velozo and Pardo, has moved to new firm Jana Charlin Cuevas Wegener Abogados.

TMT Tier 3

Contreras Velozo advises major Chilean players on TMT-related regulatory, antitrust, corporate and dispute-resolution issues. The practice acts for Telefónica Chile (Movistar), Multicaja, Direct TV, Alianza contra la Piratería and AméricaEconomía; it recently assisted Movistar with a major data-breach case affecting the Chilean telecom industry. Francisco Velozo is a key name and Javier Velozo was recently hired from Aninat Schwencke & Cia.

Dispute resolution Tier 4

Contreras Velozo acts for high-profile clients such as Sanofi-Aventis de Chile, Caterpillar Financial Services, Banco Santander and Telefónica Móviles Chile (Movistar); the team recently defended the latter against a consumer class action that alleged the interruption of mobile telephone services. Óscar Contreras Blanco, who is 'very detail oriented', and Álvaro Awad Sirhan co-head the civil litigation and commercial arbitration practice, while Francisco Velozo leads the criminal litigation group. The July 2018 arrival of Javier Velozo and Pablo Pardo from Aninat Schwencke & Cia brings additional (primarily competition-related) litigation expertise and capacity to the firm.

Corporate and M&A Tier 5

Contreras Velozo has industry expertise in international finance, mining equipment leasing and pharmaceuticals. Oscar Contreras heads the corporate practice and recent activity includes advising Mercado Libre on the merger of its Chilean subsidiaries. Clients include Sanofi-Aventis de Chile, Caterpillar Financial Services and Macquarie Mining.
