Career

Rafael leads Miranda & Amado’s Financial Regulation and Insurance and Reinsurance teams. His professional practice focuses on banking regulation, insurance, bankruptcy, complex disputes, transactions and foreign investment matters. In this connection, Rafael regularly advises on financing and collateral transactions, as well as on Financial System regulation, which includes organizational and operating authorization applications for regulated companies, corporate restructuring arrangements, and voluntary corporate restructuring and winding-up transactions. He also provides advice on Insurance System transactions and investments (including reinsurance transactions) and regulation. Rafael provides counsel in bankruptcy matters and has participated in bankruptcy proceedings relating to corporate restructuring and market exit. His substantial client portfolio includes financial sector global corporations, as well as other financial and insurance institutions operating in Peru and the region. In 1999, Rafael was among the founders of Miranda & Amado. Prior to that, he was an associate at Mayer, Brown & Platt (Chicago) in 1997 and an assistant legal manager at BBVA Banco Continental from 1994 to 1995. He serves as a Special Representative of Peru to several foreign banking and financial companies, multilateral organizations and transnational corporations. Rafael earned his law degree from Universidad Católica de Santa María, Arequipa. From 2000 to 2003, he served as a professor of Financial System Regulation at Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC). In 1999, Rafael was a visiting professor of Banking Law at Universidad de Piura.
