Adeel Akhtar
Adeel S. Akhtar is a partner in our San Francisco office. He has extensive experience in patent protection, and other forms of intellectual property protection, for high technology industries. Adeel’s practice includes strategic patent procurement, general counseling on infringement and licensing issues, pre-litigation studies, intellectual property due diligence studies and related negotiations for mergers and acquisitions. He also frequently conducts in-house seminars to assist clients in identifying and prioritizing patentable inventions. Adeel focuses on complex technologies, including software, data processing, and electronic devices such as sensors, imagers, displays, MEMS and integrated circuits. He has particular expertise in the semiconductor field, including: Integrated circuit fabrication flows Semiconductor device physics Circuit layout Scaling techniques Chip packaging Semiconductor processing equipment (ancillary systems, such as sensory systems, wafer handling systems, and metrology) Basic processes developed for the equipment, such as deposition processes (including spin-on deposition, CVD, PVD and ALD), etching, annealing, oxidation, and photolithography Outside of these specialty areas, Adeel also represents a number of clients in a broad range of other technologies, such as industrial chemicals, agricultural machinery, temperature control systems, drug delivery platforms, water purification, seismic reinforcement, sporting equipment, and web services. Rosaleen Chou
Intellectual property counselor Rosaleen Chou advises on brand protection and strategy. She represents a wide variety of domestic, multi-national and foreign-owned businesses across a broad array of industries. Her experience ranges from computer software and hardware, consumer electronics, social media, virtual reality, entertainment, fashion and apparel; to cosmetics, professional and college sports, advertising, food and beverage, wine and spirits; to financial services, telecommunications, energy, biotech, healthcare, engineering, and publishing. With clients that include famous brands, large multi-national companies and smaller, fast-growth companies alike, Rosaleen pioneers trademarks that make markets — where the result of her counsel is frequently covered by the media. She has managed extensive global trademark portfolios across 200+ countries. She advises on domestic and international searches and prosecution, as well as devises trademark filing programs and strategies focused on protecting and strengthening client brands. Skilled at auditing and identifying key growth areas, Rosaleen designs IP portfolios that align with each client’s distinct commercial goals. Notably, Rosaleen spearheads global policing and enforcement programs that protect her clients’ IP rights against infringement and dilution while furthering and safeguarding competitive advantage. This includes multi-country opposition and infringement actions, domain name disputes and UDRP proceedings, TTAB opposition and cancellation proceedings, copyright strategy, customs enforcement, and online marketplace and social media brand protection. Having worked at Meta as a full-time secondee, Rosaleen managed and developed trademark and copyright portfolios for Facebook, Instagram, Oculus, and WhatsApp. She also developed brand guidelines and managed brand licensing of these properties. As a result, Rosaleen truly understands the challenges her clients face when running their businesses and knows how to work directly with her clients’ business contacts to make their lives easier. Rosaleen is dedicated to keeping her finger on the pulse of what her clients need — exceeding their expectations at every turn. Prior to joining Knobbe Martens, Rosaleen practiced in the trademark and copyright group of an international Am Law 100 firm.
Kyu Min, Ph.D.
Kyu Min, Ph.D.
Kyu Min, Ph.D. practices intellectual property law, with a focus on strategic patent protection and portfolio management, intellectual property due diligence and general counseling on infringement, licensing, international IP protection and post-grant proceedings. Kyu represents clients in the fields of advanced semiconductor devices and processing, metallurgy and materials science, energy storage devices and systems, optical displays and devices, medical diagnostics, clean technology, and nanotechnology. Before attending law school, he worked as a process integration engineer, nanotechnologist, and advanced memory research technologist for Intel Corporation. Kyu was a key contributor in the development of the industry-leading 20 nm NAND flash technology by Intel Corp. and Micron Technology, for which the companies were awarded the prestigious Semiconductor of the Year Award in 2012 by UBM Techinsights. He holds fourteen patents and has authored nineteen journal publications. Kyu received his Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science from California Institute of Technology for his thesis research on Si-based light emitting nanostructures and devices.
Josue A. Villalta
Josue A. Villalta
For over 20 years, Josue Villalta has helped clients protect their inventions in the U.S. and internationally. Josue’s practice includes global utility and design patent portfolio development, IP audits, IP transfer agreements, due diligence associated with financings and acquisitions, and competitive landscape analysis including legal opinions, recommendations for design-arounds and pre-litigation strategy. Josue represents clients in a wide range of technologies, including Cleantech, medical devices, consumer electronics and automotive. In the Cleantech space, Josue has experience with, among others, photovoltaic solar energy, concentrated solar power, nuclear energy and gravity-based energy storage technologies. In medical devices, Josue has experience with orthopedic, ophthalmic, surgical robotic, vascular, and prosthetic technologies. Before joining the firm, Josue was a senior mechanical engineer with General Electric’s Power Generation division, where he focused on heat transfer and fluid dynamics analyses of commercial nuclear power plants under transient operating conditions. Josue joined the firm in 2002 and became a partner in 2008.
