The Mattos Filho’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program reinforces the firm’s commitment to attract, develop, retain, and promote talented professionals. It is structured in five pillars – gender equity, LGBTQIAPN+ rights, racial equity, rights of people with disabilities, and religious freedom –, and has human development policies, compulsory training, literacy events, as well as communication initiatives, content creation, and collective mentoring.
The program also has six affinity groups: 4Women, dedicated to women’s professional development; EmFamília, aimed at creating a culture that cherishes the exercise of parenting; Mfriendly, with the purpose of making the workplace even more welcoming for LGBTQIAPN+ professionals; Soma, which promotes racial equity and focuses on attracting, developing, retaining, and promoting black and brown talents; EmFrente, that aims to give visibility to professionals with disabilities and to promote their effective career development; and LiRe, which seeks to ensure that religious professionals are respected in the practice of their beliefs. Among the highlights of the program are Soma Talentos, affirmative action for self-declared black and brown interns and lawyers, who have language courses, mentoring, and a specific development path; and the dual approach of gender equity, which acts in the career of women and in the culture of parenting.
At last, there is a strategic alignment of Mattos Filho’s social ecosystem, that is, among the diversity, equity, and inclusion program, pro bono services, private social investment, and corporate volunteering. all focused on the human rights of women, the black and brown population, LGBTQIAPN+ people, and people with disabilities.
At Mattos Filho, we believe that legal work is a starting point for transforming our reality, which is why we seek to lead by example and look beyond the legal sector. Our 100% Pro bono practice, Corporate Citizenship area, and Instituto Mattos Filho make up the pillars of our Social Ecosystem, through which we promote democratic access to justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and knowledge of the legal system.
In 2021, one of the highlights of our pro bono work involved renewing our partnership with the Public Defender’s Office of the State of São Paulo, through which we assist people who have suffered racism, female victims of domestic violence, and victims of gender/sexual orientation discrimination.
From individuals in socially vulnerable situations and not-for-profit organizations in their early stages, we supported a total of 293 pro bono clients in 2021, with approximately 400 professionals dedicating more than 20,000 hours, on top of the work conducted by our exclusive Mattos Filho 100% Pro bono practice.
In 2021, the firm supported the Unidos pela Vacina (United for Vaccination) movement, a civil society initiative to facilitate Brazilians’ access to Covid-19 vaccinations. Mova – the firm’s volunteer program – promoted campaigns with the organization União BR to raise funds for oxygen cylinders and other items sent to a hospital in rural Amazonas, as well as food packages to over 5,000 needy families in different Brazilian states.
Furthermore, we have expanded our pro bono services to refugees and migrants. As well as assisting these people with integrating into the country.
