Compliance Tier 2

The 'excellent and cohesive' compliance team at KLA Advogados can count on 'very skilled and experienced professionals' and is noted for its 'prompt responses'. For recent client SOMOS Educação, a team advised on the regularisation of 30 education units in various states. Elsewhere, Ricardo Stuber advised Habitasec Securitizadora on CRI-related matters. Pedro Cortez and Rodrigo Pontes are 'well-recognised and tested lawyers in the Brazilian market'; however, Mark Stalder moved to Demarest Advogados in December 2019.  At the associate level, Tomaz Matheus and Carla Fernandes are also recommended.

The team has experience across myriad industries, but stands out in particular in the advertising and tech sectors. Highlights among the department's recent workload was its advice to IPG Photonics on an investment in IT company IDEA; Tania Liberman led the team, which included key senior associate Patrícia Braga. Other clients include Boston Scientific, Omnicom and General Mills. The 'committed and dedicated' Karin Alvo is 'a partner you can count on'. Mariana Cortez often takes lead roles on the department's major transactions; Melissa Kanô has an impressive track record in the advertising and renewable energy sectors; and Luiz Filipe Aranha is active in domestic and cross-border corporate transactions.

Dispute resolution (including White-collar crime) Tier 3

KLA Advogados' disputes department is 'highly technical, professional and knowledgeable'. It has 'extensive experience in complex cases', spanning commercial, competition, public law and real estate disputes. Maria Cristina Junqueira acts for international clients in litigation and alternative dispute resolution. White collar partner Filipe Magliarelli 'works well in a team and has the appropriate profile to lead people in large cases', and dispute resolution and antitrust expert Tiago Cortez 'understands the practical terms of a dispute and its consequences'. Associates Aline Adestro, Danilo Orenga and André Canuto Muriel Mendes de Almeida are also noted.

Tax Tier 3

Tax is a core area at KLA Advogados. The internationally focused team acts for both multinationals and Brazilian companies, and is especially active in the telecoms, life sciences, automotive and transport sectors, although it has experience across a broader range of industries. A cross-department team that included tax partner Henrique Lopes advised Seabras and Seaborn on a high-speed submarine fibre cable system connecting New Jersey in the US and Praia Grande in Brazil. Victor Polizelli and Álvaro Lucasechi co-head the practice with Lopes. Tatiana Vikanis left to establish her own firm.

Capital markets Tier 4

KLA Advogados’ houses a ‘solid team with good expertise’, which leverages the wider firm’s impressive real estate practice to shine in property-related matters, including CRI offerings and fund issues. In a recent example of its sweet spot, Ricardo Stuber advised Hotelaria Accor, as guarantor, on Ápice Securitizadora’s R$20m CRI issuance. Ricardo Higashitani and Fernanda Levy are also key contacts.

Competition and antitrust Tier 4

Noted for its 'solid and strong technical legal knowledge', KLA Advogados demonstrates 'excellent communication skills' and has a 'broad vision of the Brazilian legal framework'. The antitrust team advises domestic and international companies from various sectors on administrative proceedings before CADE, multi-jurisdictional merger filings and competition compliance and best practices. 'Experts in antitrust law', Tiago Cortez and associate Maria Wagner are 'very committed'. Intellectual property Tier 4

KLA Advogados  has a team of 'strategic thinkers'. While mostly handling transactions, the group has been expanding its litigation work; cases included defending Wieden+Kennedy against a case brought by the copyright owner of a musical composition allegedly used in an advertisement created by the agency. Banking and finance Tier 5

The 'very experienced and hard-working team' at KLA Advogados provides a 'highly personalised service', according to sources. The group, which is also lauded as 'incredibly responsive', acts for a relatively even split of lenders and borrowers, with restructuring transactions standing out as a sweet spot. Among its highlights, the firm assisted Imovelweb on the restructuring of all inter-company loans contracted by the company and other companies of the group. On the regulatory side, it advised Banco Brasil Plural on the regulatory aspects of foreign-exchange transactions. The firm has also recently undertaken work for Boart Longyear, Cred-System and Standard Bank. KLA Advogados advises on license auctions, contracts and regulatory matters relating to telecoms work. Examples were assisting Smartmatic with applying for a telecoms authorisation; and acting for satellite communication and internet services provider EchoStar concerning the request for waiver of the satellite exploitation right in Brazil. Guilherme Ieno handles telecoms matters and Tania Liberman acts on data protection.
