Data privacy and data protection Tier 1

Baker McKenzie is particularly well versed in cross-border work, both in contentious matters, such as the representation of clients in international disputes involving multiple data protection authorities, and in advisory matters, including advising on multi-jurisdictional compliance surveys and studies for data privacy, e-commerce and other internet projects. The team, which is led by Rémy Bricard and Laurent Szuskin, is also increasingly active in cybercrime cases in which it assists with the conduct of investigations regarding fraud and data breaches and represents clients in related civil and criminal law remedies. Anti-corruption and anti-money laundering measures related to data processing is another area of strength. Led by Yann Padova, the group co-launched a GDPR offering in May 2018 together with specialist communication consultants Havas Legal & Litigation. Additionally, the practice offers the 'GDPR Survey', a tool used for tracking compliance processes in organisations created by the firm in collaboration with BearingPoint. Magalie Dansac Le Clerc oversees work relating to the survey tool.

Industry focus: IT and internet Tier 1

Baker McKenzie 's very experienced 12-lawyer team advises many leading technology user corporations and banks, as well as technology providers, on the setting up of strategic and large-scale IT projects, including SaaS, outsourcing, digitalisation and new e-platform projects and solutions. Litigation is also dealt with. The practice is notably retained by leading French banks to assist with the negotiation of very significant mainstream IT contracts and to help with new types of  IT projects in the financial services sector. Additionally, the team also advises several telecoms companies on major internet broadband network infrastructure transactions and assists clients with data privacy and cyber-attack issues. Rémy Bricard and Laurent Szuskin co-head the practice. Christian Blomet and Magalie Dansac Le Clerc are also highly recommended.

Baker McKenzie fields 'a very practical and experienced' intellectual property team which handles a mixture of advisory and enforcement work across a wide range of sectors. Practice head Virginie Ulmann advised British American Tobacco on a cross-border pre-contentious matter surrounding the launch of a new product, with respect to prior EU trade mark rights owned by a French individual. Cases often involve challenging the current French tax regime before the national and EU courts; the firm’s track record in that area was further enhanced by its successful representation of Google in a €1bn reassessment dispute before the Court of Appeal. The tax litigation practice is co-led by star partner Eric Meier, Régis Torlet and Ariane Calloud.
