Hugh Jones
Hugh Jones is a nationally recognised leader in his field of Court of Protection and Private Client work. He has worked in this field for over 40 years and his expertise as a Court of Protection Deputy is such that he is in demand as an expert witness, providing advice and statements on all aspects of Court of Protection practice, costs and mental capacity issues and has been asked by the Court of Protection in the last year to contribute to consultations on developing issues. Hugh was Head of the Court of Protection department at Pannone LLP for many years; he built the Court of Protection department to a team of 50, with a £3m turnover, before a negotiated departure in March 2013, taking staff and clients with him to set up Hugh Jones Solicitors.
He has a vast experience of all aspects of the specialism:
\tActing as property and affairs deputy for many hundreds of clients over his career, who have impairments due to acquired brain injury, deteriorating illnesses, learning disabilities and mental health illnesses;
\tUntil December 2025, he was appointed as an OPG panel deputy for approx. 35 new clients each year, which often involve complex legal issues, sensitive family issues and depleted estates;
\tFinancial abuse investigations;
\tApplications to call in security bonds;
\tCoP applications including applications for the appointment of a deputy, statutory will applications, gift applications, applications for approval of gratuitous/family care payments, applications for retrospective approval of a decision and applications for the approval of a property purchase;
\tContested CoP proceedings and Judicial Review applications;
\tApplications for the discharge of a Protected Party who has recovered capacity to make their own property and affairs decisions.
Hugh is included in the 'Hall of Fame' by the Legal 500 2025 and 2026 and awarded 'Senior Statesperson' status in Chambers 2026.
In September 2019, Hugh was awarded the prestigious lifetime achievement award by the judges of the STEP Private Client awards and Manchester Law Society's Partner of the year in 2014.
Hugh was a member of the panel of Deputies appointed by the Court of Protection to manage the affairs of someone who has lost capacity until December 2025 and received 29 referrals in 2025. Over the years, he has assisted many special interest groups for children with learning disabilities and many local and national charities including a large number of Wills for parents of learning disabled children.
Hugh is a nationally recognised expert and has been an eminent speaker on all aspects of provisions for the learning disabled, mental incapacity and the Court of Protection. He is a member of:
