Ana-Maria Baciu, Managing Partner
What do you see as the main points that differentiate BACIU PARTNERS from your competitors?
In a business environment where external legal services increasingly feel like a commodity, differentiation goes beyond claiming “exceptional, tailored client service” (in the end, how many exceptions to the same standard can there be?).
For us, differentiation begins with clarity and relevance. We provide timely and practical advice, expressed in language that businesspeople understand without repeated back-and-forth seeking clarifications.
We are deliberate in balancing the “golden triangle” of cost, time, quality, aiming to deliver what truly makes a difference and matters for each client’s priorities.
Taking a step closer in our relationships, we consider as another differentiation the quality of our interactions, as we stay close to clients not only when legal work is ongoing, but also when it isn’t, by understanding their business context, anticipating regulatory developments and simply being available as an alternative sounding board.
Changing the reference angle, internally, we recently reevaluated at management level what sets us apart in this highly competitive market: we are confident to say that we place strong emphasis on genuine mentoring and professional formation. Young lawyers benefit from real coordination, exposure to reasoning and strategy, and clear guidance on what it means to build a sustainable legal career, all with a consistent sense of meaningful autonomy. This naturally extends to our involvement with law students through both formal and informal initiatives.
Finally, looking at the overall picture, we consciously practice empathy and kindness, every day. We believe long-term professional success requires decency, trust and accountability — not only technical performance.
In short, what sets BACIU PARTNERS apart goes from great professional success stories to who we are when no client is watching.
Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?
Alongside continued growth of our flagship practices – intellectual property, gambling and consumer protection, advertising and retail, we see strong upward trends in dispute resolution, as well as other compliance aspects including all-digital, privacy, AML, or employment, true to our “regulatory powerhouse” standing.
Also, disputes resolution is becoming more nuances and specialized. We are extending our role from a go-to firm for IP-intensive industries, gambling regulatory and consumer facing businesses to an increasingly prominent advisor in disputes connected to these areas, where deep compliance driven understanding is critical to litigation strategy.
These developments are driven by increasing regulatory complexity, heightened risk awareness and clients’ growing need for integrated advice that connects compliance, strategy and operational-business impact.
What's the main change you've made in the firm that will benefit clients?
Beyond any single initiative, what truly matters is the consistency of the approach behind change: we design and implement adjustments, whether operational or strategic, to enhance how effectively and coherently our teams collaborate, closely evaluating all reasonable scenarios, we deliver valuable outputs – be those legal assistance, legislative initiatives advocacy, free-bees that boost interactions and knowledge up to the much needed “How are you?”.
We have been continuously strengthening internal coordination and creating more intentional structures for deploying expertise from top down. This allows us to remain consistent in our work.
Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?
Like most business law firms, we have been experimenting with AI tools long before they became everyone's favourite topic.
Although we believe that this technology can be useful in analysing large volumes of data, in automating repetitive tasks or even in generating first-stage document drafts, it is still not characterized by what I believe makes the real difference when it comes to valuable legal work: critical thinking, intuition and a deep understanding of contextual nuances.
Practicing law is more than the application of rules; it requires interpretation, strategy and, above all, meaningful interaction. A lawyer’s contribution lies in asking the right questions in a specific context, anticipating implications and navigating nuances, dimensions that no algorithm, however advanced, can replicate.
Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?
Beyond individual cases, what has become increasingly clear in our work is that legal practice areas cannot operate in isolation, as their interaction has a direct impact on the success of our clients and the projects we support. The matrix-alike structure we put forward, with a propensity to regulatory work, best reflect a coherent approach in this respect.
A good illustration comes from a project that followed a transaction involving a highly specialised manufacturing, where an investor acquired a production facility. After the closing, it became apparent that a key patent essential to the manufacturing process had not been included in the transaction.
At that point, the question was not simply whether to litigate or to renegotiate. The real added value came from helping the client understand the full range of options, be those legal, commercial and strategic, and the implications of each.
By bringing together expertise from intellectual property, corporate and dispute resolution, we assessed enforcement scenarios, negotiated commercially viable alternatives and explored solutions that would allow the client to continue operating without disruption.
Our role was to be present throughout the process, enabling a decision that protected both the investment and the long-term business objectives.
This is, in essence, how we add value: not by offering isolated legal answers, but being mindful and proactive, with clarity and confidence.
Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms - where do you see the firm in three years’ time?
Clients increasingly seek stability, consistency and a perceivable direction, moreso in a regulatory environment that evolves rapidly. But most of all, they welcome partnerships based on trust and reliability.
Our firm’s promise to both its team and to our clients is clear: we are here to stay.
Looking ahead, my personal commitment and every day bet is to continue building a firm that earns, every day, the status of partner to the business community. A firm that combines knowledge and experience with sound judgments.
