Francesco Banterle is an enthusiastic and well-practiced intellectual property litigator with a strong passion for technology and digital issues and a focus on life sciences.

Francesco counsels international and local clients handling all modern IP and tech-related issues, always aiming to find the most effective, innovative, and client-oriented approach.

He navigates clients on a variety of intellectual property matters related to copyright, software and AI, trade secrets, unfair competition, the overlap between intellectual property and data laws, online enforcement, liability regimes for internet service providers, and patents including issues also arising before the Unified Patent Court (UPC).

Francesco advises leading online service providers on copyright, trademarks, and liability regimes in the fields of policy and litigation on an Italian and EU level.

Francesco is particularly sought after in the life sciences industry and assists multinational companies in a broad range of matters related to patent litigation with cross-border implications, often involving complex pan-European issues, clinical trials, SPCs, and regulatory aspects.

With a Ph.D. in IP law, Francesco is an Adjunct Professor of Managing and Evaluating Intellectual Property at the University of Milan.

He regularly contributes to academic publications, blogs and newsletters with insights on IP and IT topics and is currently conducting an academic investigation into artificial intelligence issues in the IP field, and data ownership emerging issues.

Moreover, he is often invited as a speaker to IP conferences and seminars.

Prior to Hogan Lovells, he worked in the Intellectual Property and Information Technology law department of one of the leading Italian law firms and as group legal counsel at a multinational company based in Switzerland.
