Dispute resolution: Commercial litigation Tier 4

The ‘patient and understanding’ team at Buren has developed its cross-border capability, especially in Asia, where it has strengthened its client base. Co-practice heads Damien Berkhout, who was a new arrival from Stibbe, and Philip W M ter Burg are defending Cathay Airways and Latham Airlines in several proceedings involving civil law antitrust follow-on damage claims, arising from EU Commission fines for cartel activity. Marc Velden van der and Jan Holthuis are also recommended.  Nippon Suisan and BDO are other clients. Evert Jan van Drongelen is now with the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service.

Restructuring and insolvency Tier 4

Buren has a broad restructuring and insolvency offering, especially for trustee work; senior associate Laurens Prickartz was appointed as trustee in bankruptcy for Fine Asian Gourmet (aka Sticky Rice). Martijn Vermeeren and Pieter van den Berg co-lead the group.

Tax Tier 4

The ‘exceptionally knowledgeableCees-Frans Greeven and ‘stellar’ practitioner Peter van Dijk lead the tax practice at Buren. The duo advise a wide range of global clients on M&A transactions, transfer pricing and international tax matters. Of counsel René Bours is also noted.

Employment Tier 5

At Buren, Suzan van de Kam acted as a local counsel to Lincoln Electric in connection with the reorganization of its Nordic business which included consultation proceedings with unions and works councils and redundancies. Together with Joost Quant, she also assisted Zeeman which has some 1,300 branches in Europe, on all its employment issues including consultation proceedings with the Dutch Works Council, the establishment of a European Works Council, and a number of dismissal proceedings.

Commercial, corporate and M&a Tier 6

'Commercially oriented and providing pragmatic advice', Buren has offices in  Amsterdam, The Hague, and Luxembourg, and a strong Asia-facing practice thanks to its offices in Beijing and Shanghai. Pieter van den Berg, Paul Deloo, and Tjeerd Aghina are the notable partners and senior associate Coen van der Mark is also recommended. The group advised Valeant Pharmaceuticals on the merger of Netherlands-based Valeant Europe into a Hungarian pharma company. Recent arrivals include Jan Holthuis, who specialises in Chinese law, and Damien Berkhout who joined from Stibbe.
