Joe Beashel

Joe Beashel

Joe Beashel is a partner and Co-Head of the Financial Institutions Group and Head of Matheson’s London office. He is a solicitor with thirty years’ experience almost all of which were gained in the financial services sector. Before joining Matheson in 2004, he was the country head of the Irish fund administration unit of Invesco plc, a leading international investment manager. Joe and team assist clients with the authorisation of new financial service providers by the Central Bank of Ireland including banks, MiFID / investment firms, fund services providers, alternative investment fund managers, payment and e-money institutions, retail credit firms and others. He also assists client firms where they wish to expand their existing regulatory permissions. Working with corporate colleagues in the Financial Institutions Group, Joe and team assist with the merger and acquisition, private equity investment and divestment of Irish regulated firms. Drawing on his extensive industry experience, Joe provides practical advice and assistance to boards of directors, senior management, in-house counsel and compliance officers in relation to the impact of new regulation. He assists clients in the effective and timely implementation of any required changes and works to provide a robust assurance that implementation meets legal requirements. Joe and his team assist clients to carry out reviews of their process and procedures covering issues such as anti-money laundering, MiFID suitability, client assets requirements. He assists clients prepare for interview by the Central Bank of Ireland as part of its “Fitness and Probity” framework.  He also assists clients prepare for supervisory inspections. When issues arise he assists clients in assessing the legal and regulatory impact and helps develop remediation plans. Where the Central Bank initiates its administrative sanctions process he works with clients to minimise the impact of any sanction imposed. For sanctions processes he works very closely with Matheson litigation colleagues. Joe has spoken and written extensively on financial regulatory related matters over many years.  He co-ordinates the drafting of course materials for the Institute of Bankers of Ireland Professional Development (Level 3) qualification. He published a MIFID Directory (for MIFI 1 and 2) and a Fitness and Probity Handbook.
Alan Bunbury

Alan Bunbury

Alan Bunbury is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department at Matheson. Alan advises on all aspects of debt capital markets transactions with an Irish connection, including collateralised loan obligation transactions, asset-backed securities, repackagings, asset-backed commercial paper programmes, corporate bond issuances and segregated managed account structures. Alan’s also advises Irish corporates and investment funds and their counterparties in relation to derivatives transactions, repurchase transactions, securities lending and prime brokerage arrangements and the operation of netting and set-off in Ireland. Alan trained with Matheson and qualified as a solicitor in 2016.  Alan is currently based in the firm’s London office.

Sandie is a partner in Matheson’s Corporate Department. She advises on international and domestic mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, shareholders’ agreements, investment agreements and joint ventures, venture capital, corporate reorganisations and restructurings. Sandie represents public and private companies, institutional investors and financial intermediaries engaged in a variety of industries and sectors including technology, energy and media. Since 2022, Sandie has been the resident Corporate partner in Matheson’s London office.

Ian O'Mara

Ian is a partner in the Financial Institutions Group, specialising in financial services regulation. Ian has advised payment institutions, electronic money institutions, credit institutions, MiFID investment firms, and other financial institutions and investors in the financial services sector on compliance with regulatory standards and the impact of new regulatory developments at Irish and EU levels. Ian is currently based in Matheson's London office.
Liam Quirke

Liam Quirke

Liam Quirke is a member of Matheson’s Tax Department.  He was Managing Partner of Matheson for more than 12 years and also served as Partnership Chairman for two years.  Prior to moving into management, Liam founded and led Matheson’s pre-eminent Tax practice for 12 years.  He also established and led the firm’s market leading International Business practice for nearly a decade.  In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the firm over the course of nearly three decades, Matheson appointed Liam as Chairman Emeritus of the firm in January, 2018.  Liam has concentrated his legal career on the Irish legal needs of international companies and financial institutions with a particular focus on such companies which have established in Ireland with a view to accessing the EU market.Liam is widely acknowledged as both an influential business leader and one of the leading international tax lawyers in Ireland.  He is a member of the Council of the Law Society of Ireland, the Council of University College Dublin’s Sutherland School of Law and the only Irish member of the Council of New York University’s International Tax Programme.  Liam served on the Irish Prime Minister’s Committee on International Banking and Treasury for many years and is also a former Chairman of the Irish Branch of the International Fiscal Association and a former council member of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
