Diversity
In 2021, Matheson launched its Impactful Business Programme (IBP), a comprehensive initiative designed to integrate the firm's existing strategies regarding Diversity and Inclusion (D&I), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Environmental Sustainability, and the Arts into a single, cohesive framework. The IBP aims to deliver sustainable and measurable change for our colleagues, our clients and for the communities in which we operate.
Matheson’s Impactful Business Programme has a Steering Committee, chaired by the firm's Managing Partner. The other members of the Steering Committee all hold senior positions in the firm. Currently, about one in ten of our Matheson colleagues are actively involved in organising and delivering our IBP projects, initiatives and events, which in 2025 included:
Matheson's Transition Year (TY) Programme: In 2025, we welcomed over 100 pupils from 70+ schools across Ireland to the firm’s week-long Transition Year Programmes, ensuring at least 20 of the attendees were DEIS (Delivering Equality of Education in Schools) pupils. DEIS schools are those identified by the Irish Department of Education as schools with high concentrations of poverty or social exclusion. Since 2021, we have welcomed over 500 TY pupils to the firm, at least 20% of whom were DEIS pupils.
Matheson Days of Giving: In 2025, we enhanced our ‘Days of Giving’ initiative in partnership with local schools. Matheson colleagues met pupils and did some gardening with them, held a careers talk with the pupils and were joined by a partner from the firm who had attended a DEIS school, a true ‘see it to be it’ example for the pupils. On subsequent visits, we invited a client to join us and speak about career pathways to working in the financial services sector.
Matheson's Career First Programme: Matheson's Career First Programme is the only 12-month skills and work placement programme offered by a law firm in Ireland for first year university students. In 2025, 100% of the students we welcomed to the programme were from either Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) schemes or Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) schemes in their university, the first of its kind among Irish law firms.
Pride Month: In June, the firm’s LGBTQ+ Committee held the annual Matheson Pride Table Quiz. Over 200 of our colleagues attended the quiz, for an evening of laughter, connection and a celebration of our differences.
Royal Irish Academy of Music Neurodivergent Friendly Music Camp: We were delighted to once again sponsor the Exploring The Orchestra – Neurodivergent Friendly Music Camp Series at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM). 2025 marked our third year sponsoring this children’s music camp, which aims to create an inclusive space where neurodivergent young people can explore the joy of classical music.
Christmas Fundraisers: In December, we once again we supported the Capuchin Day Centre and Cork Penny Dinners, both of whom work with disadvantaged groups in Dublin and Cork, providing food and other essential social inclusion and healthcare supports. We also ran a fundraiser for ALONE, a national charity that works with older people, helping them to age at home, as well as to improve their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
Dublin Bay Oyster Reseeding Project: Colleagues from our Environmental Sustainability Committee assisted with the counting and deployment of 18,000 oysters from the shore to baskets as part of Matheson’s commitment to the Dublin Bay Oyster Reseeding Project.
Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland: Matheson Memory Walk: Organised by the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee in partnership with our Intergenerational Committee, we held our first Matheson Memory Walk in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland (ASI). Before we embarked on the walk, colleagues were invited to attend a discussion about Alzheimer’s, where Matheson colleagues shared their own familial experiences of Alzheimer's. Over 150 colleagues across Dublin, London and Cork offices took part in the walk, raising vital funds for the Alzheimer's Society of Ireland.
