Writ: Formal notice of proceedings; now simply called a Claim

Pleadings: Particulars of Claim, Defences and Replies submitted to the Court; now called Statement of Case

Interlocutory: The period between the claim being served and the start of the trial

Discovery: Hunting out relevant documents and disclosing them to the other side

Taxation: Now called assessment of costs

Proportionality: Keeping costs in proportion to the size and importance of the case

White Book/Green Book: Pre-Woolf rules

Brown Book: Post-Woolf litigation rules

Affidavit: Witness statement sworn on oath

ADR: Alternative dispute resolution
