In September last year, more than twenty commercial property owners signed up to the Better Buildings Partnership Climate Change Commitment. Each of the signatories committed to publish its own pathway by the end of this year of how it would become net zero carbon by 2050.
A focus on sustainability is something we are seeing increasingly from more of our clients, not just those who have signed up to the commitment, which shows the importance developers in particular are placing on it. Indeed, many developers require all tenants to sign up to the same commitments in their leases. On the flip side, many potential tenants will not agree to take space in a building which cannot prove its sustainability credentials.
This week, Derwent London released its pathway which will be assured by Deloitte. Derwent London has also committed to becoming net zero carbon by 2030, some twenty years before the deadline.
