As part of its preparations for the liberalisation of the securities market within the EU from January 1 1996, the Amsterdam Exchanges NV has been strengthening its own self regulatory procedures in light of the increasing complexity of and internationalisation of financial markets.
In the 1994 annual report of the Amsterdam Exchanges NV, chairman Baron B F Van Ittersum, says it would be wrong if national legislation were to impose unnecessary restrictions with regard to stock exchange regulation.
He warns that "Should the Netherlands' recognise exchanges not be designated as the competent authorities within the framework of the European directives, then their self regulating role would be seriously undermined."
He adds, "This would seriously damage the quality and cost levels of our market. We cannot afford to be disadvantaged in this way in the competitive battle the bigger markets."
