CPD Points System: Changes Afoot

The requirements for continuing professional development required for your builder's licence in New South Wales (the CPD Points System) are about to change.

The Department of Fair Trading is concerned that some of the courses offered are not relevant to those performing residential building work and won't necessarily develop relevant skills and knowledge.

The department has also acknowledged that the point system is confusing and this will be changing to a system that provides for a flat 12 points per annum requirement.

The new system will incorporate compulsory courses to address industry issues and these will be determined by consultation with an Industry Reference Group which will include representatives of the MBA, HIA, SPASA, TAFE and others.

The new system will commence on 1 September 2007 and each licence holder's transition to the new arrangements will occur on the date of their next licence renewal.

Private study will no longer qualify for CPD points. Neither will subscription to trade magazines. The weighting of membership of Industry Associations will be reduced considerably, if not eliminated.

The department will also be developing a new system for distance education and online courses will enable licence holders to acquire at least a proportion of their CPD points at a time and place that suits them.

Full details of the changes to the compulsory professional development regime have not been finalised but they will be circulated to members well prior to the 1 September 2007 commencement date.
