One of Matthew’s previous roles, as in-house barrister and legal project manager at the AIRE Centre, involved developing and bringing strategic litigation and interventions to the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and Court of Justice of the European Union.
An example is the successful intervention in Saint Prix v Secretary of State for Work and Pensions [2014] EUECJ C-507/12, in which the CJEU confirmed that EEA national women who give up work due to the physical constraints of pregnancy and childbirth remain ‘workers’ under Article 45 TFEU.
Matthew is an honorary fellow at Sussex University in recognition of his pro bono work with the Law School’s Migration Law Clinic, supervising students in the provision of free legal advice to lay clients. He also volunteers with the UK Lesbian & Gay Immigration Group.
In his spare time, Matthew is a qualified football coach, bravely navigating his son’s team through the trials and tribulations of their fledgling careers as international superstars.
