Position

Gideon Cammerman is an established advocate of 12 years’ standing. He specialises in offences of serious organised crime and fraud. Gideon is an able academic lawyer and experienced jury advocate, well-practised at marshalling large and complex cases, both prosecuting and defending. He defends complex fraud and confiscation, in addition to general serious crime, including offences of murder, armed robbery, excise offences and serious assaults. Gideon prosecutes for HM Revenue and Customs (List B – applied when under ten years’ call), the Department for Work and Pensions (List B – applied when under ten years’ call) and the CPS (Grade 3). Gideon returned from Jersey in early 2008, having spent 18 months advising the defence in the largest money laundering case in the history of the Channel Islands. Two trials were followed by significant confiscation proceedings. The prosecution alleged a liability for criminal benefit of £38m. The benefit figure attained by the prosecution was 1/4 of that they sought. Gideon has advised on subsequent appeals and was led in the appeal to the Privy Council on a point of law relating to the definition of predicate crime in money laundering cases. Prior to travelling to Jersey, Gideon spent five months led by standing counsel to HM Revenue and Customs prosecuting an eight-handed, multimillion-pound cocaine importation case. Before that Gideon prosecuted another multi-handed, multi-kilo heroin importation for four months. Notable cases: R v T-H (prosecuted police officers charged with benefits fraud); R v B (prosecuted a domestic murder led by Richard Latham QC); R v D (defended a ten-handed, multimillion-pound excise evasion); R v Y (defended a four-handed £16m confiscation hearing); R v B (defended a money laundering and drugs conspiracy case); R v S (defended a four-handed armed robbery case); R v K (prosecuted this seven-handed conspiracy to supply class A drugs, which was the first which required PII application to the Court of Appeal in respect of allegations of police corruption). Gideon is currently instructed defending the lead defendant in a multi-handed fraudulent share sales case. He is also currently instructed to prosecute a 14-defendant conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.
