Position

Leading junior specialising in serious criminal trials, inquests and regulatory work. Cases of interest: R V Cilgram [1994], inconsistent verdicts; R v Doheny [1997], leading case on DNA evidence; R v H [2002], sexual behaviour and the right to cross examine; the Capper case, a case of torture and murder; R v Hardy, a multimillion pound drugs conspiracy; R v Latif, a murder case where the defendant was extradited from the USA to stand trial; R v Mutch, the case concerning the Manchester bombing and the MEN. Defended a Scottish National Liberation defendant for sending letter bombs in the post; R v Awan, a high profile Customs and Excise case; R v Coughlan case concerning the allegation of murder of Chris Little. Regularly instructed in other murder, large fraud and drug cases as well as numerous complex rape cases. Inquests: represented the NWAS in the Cumbrian shootings inquests at Whitehaven; represented the police federation in the shooting of a man carrying a samurai sword in Liverpool; instructed in inquests concerning deaths in custody and a police chase; instructed for a range of professional bodies; presently instructed in the Hillsborough Inquests.

Career

Called 1978; Lincoln’s Inn; lectures on topics on human rights; class 4 prosecution for CPS; Recorder.

Bolton School followed by Wolverhampton Polytechnic as it then was. LLB (Hons).

Leisure

Mountaineering, fly fishing, kayaking, Scottish history, anything to do with Tibet, comparative religions, literature. Messing about in boats.
