Murdo specialises in criminal law, particularly in the fields of corporate financial, environmental, health and safety prosecutions and other regulatory offences. He has been described as “Top of the list for regulatory issues and complex business crime” (Legal 500, 2015). He is regularly instructed by commercial and institutional clients, both for trials - where he is described as being “quite superb on his feet” (Chambers, 2016) - and in an advisory capacity. He also specializes in fatal accident and public inquiries. Between 2005-2010 he served as counsel to the inquiry in the Billy Wright Inquiry in Northern Ireland. He has considerable experience in criminal law having served as senior Crown Counsel. He is a practising member of the English Bar (Temple Garden Chambers) and sits as a part-time Sheriff. Representative cases include: HMA v Coulson, 2015 (Defended former newspaper in perjury trial); HMA v Siemens, 2015 (defended manufacturer in health and safety case); Re Super Puma Inquiry, 2014 (represented core participant in major inquiry); Re Rangers FC, 2014-2015: (represented City law firm in ongoing financial inquiry); FCL v HMRC, 2013 (advised export company on HMRC decision on customs warehousing facility); Taqa Bratani v DECC, 2012 (represented oil company in appeal against enforcement notice re offshore pollution); HMA v Klondyke Ltd, Shetland Catch Ltd, Freshcatch Ltd, 2011-12 (represented three companies and several individuals in a series of landmark prosecutions for breaches of EU fishing regulations); Re Billy Wright inquiry, 2005-2010 (counsel to the inquiry in major public inquiry into the murder of a prominent terrorist and the running of HMP Maze); HMA v Megrahi and Fhimah, 1999-2001 (junior counsel for second accused in Lockerbie/Pan-Am bombing trial).
