Gurprit joined No5 as a tenant in 2020, after a short time away, practising in the BVI. She specialises in commercial litigation, offshore work, civil fraud, domestic and cross-border insolvency, partnership disputes, financial services and consumer finance.
Gurprit has been instructed in a very high-profile fraud over the last couple of years, the 1MDB Fraud, where it is alleged that 7.65 billion dollars have been stolen from the government of Malaysia. She is part of the team seeking to make recoveries worldwide. She has also been instructed in a number of other high-profile offshore disputes, IsZo Capital v Nam Tai & Others, a multimillion shareholder dispute, Bowview Overseas Limited and Others, a substantial debt dispute and, the Alfa Bank v Emmerson fraud.
Gurprit is regularly instructed by international banks on financial services disputes and consumer credit cases. She spent a number of years advising HSBC Bank Plc, Global Markets for a number of years in their Early Neutral Evaluation process of derivative miss-selling claims. Gurprit gained significant experience within financial services through being seconded to the Financial Conduct Authority, where she has worked on a number of large cases relating to collective investment schemes, Libor manipulation, unfair contract terms in consumer contracts and corporate fraud.
Gurprit represents clients at the High Court and County Court, as well as at all appellate courts. She appears on a wide range of applications under the Insolvency Act and Rules at all levels. She works well within a large counsel and solicitor team and has experience of working on multi-week trials. Gurprit started at the bar as a criminal barrister, before transferring to the commercial bar and therefore has gained substantive advocacy experience in a highly pressurised environment.
