Position

Richard specialises in prosecuting and defending serious crime and fraud.  He is currently instructed in two inter-jurisdictional bribery and corruption cases.  He has experience in cases of complex fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, drug importation and smuggling. These cases usually involve criminality coordinated at an international level.

Richard was the first junior barrister acting alone to prosecute a murder case resulting in the imposition of a life sentence with a whole life tariff.  He was lead counsel in the first SFO prosecution that went to trial of a UK national charged with overseas corruption of a foreign government.  He has experience in prosecuting multi-handed cases, and cases concerning organised crime groups.

Richard has particular experience defending fraud allegations, as well as cases of murder, drugs, firearms and sexual offences.  He defended successfully the oldest person at the time [aged 97] to be prosecution for historic sexual offending.  He has experience defending in disciplinary tribunals, inquests and inquiries.  He was junior counsel representing a number of officers in the Lawrence Inquiry, and was involved in working on the case defending Ian Maxwell.

Richard is an active member of the Fraud Advisory Panel.  As a former member of the Conduct Committee of the Bar Standards Board he assessed and dealt with complaints made against barristers.

Richard accepts direct access instructions.
