John Grieve is the leader of Fasken Martineau's Global Insolvency and Restructuring Group. His practice focuses on complex commercial reorganizations. John has acted as counsel for the Petitioner in numerous CCAA reorganisations, including those of Bear Mountain Master Partnership, Pope & Talbot, Adanac Minerals, 360 networks and St. Eugene's Mission; counsel for a major creditor in Advance Engineered Products, Canada 3000, Maple Leaf Loading, Three Sisters Mountain Village, Xillix Technologies Corp., Brussels Chocolates, Coalmont Energy Corporation and North American Steamships Limited; counsel for the receiver or trustee in K2 Developments Ltd., United Used Auto, Aquattro Estates, Eron Mortgage and McBride Forest Products; and counsel for the Monitor in Catalyst Paper, Sterling Shoes, Angiotech, Mariposa Stores and Ascalade Communications. John Recently acted for the purchaser in the CCAA of Comark. John is currently acting as Representative Counsel for the 3700 investors in the CCAA of League Investments and acted for 3000 time share holders in the matter of the CCAA of Aviawest. He frequently lectures at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, the Annual Review of Insolvency Law and CAIRP. John is a member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada, Turnaround Management Association and Insol International. He was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1985.

Vancouver-based John Grieve QC is a high-profile figure in the market and is advising HSBC, the main operating lender, in Walton International Group’s CCAA restructuring. In a notable distressed M&A highlight, Toronto-based insolvency chair Stuart Brotman — ‘a regular presence on big files’ — acted for Sonar as the successful bidder in the sale solicitation process of Tricon Films and Television. The team also draws upon the experience of Toronto-based insolvency litigator Aubrey Kauffman and Vancouver-based Kibben Jackson.
