Position

James Taylor is a partner in the Banking & Finance practice of the London office. James’ practice focuses on public and private offerings of debt and equity-linked securities, advising issuers and underwriters on the standalone issue and offering of retail and wholesale medium term notes, commercial paper, certificates of deposit, warrants, convertible and exchangeable bonds and covered bonds, as well as the establishment and update of platforms for the issuance of multiple types of securities, the structuring of liability management transactions and the provision of ongoing advice on securities laws, corporate governance and stock exchange requirements related to them. James has, in recent years, advised state-owned and privately owned companies and underwriting banks on some of the most cutting edge equity-linked instruments to come to market, including mandatory convertible bonds issued as part of recapitalisation programmes and contingent capital instruments and other forms of regulatory capital issued in compliance with the Basel III guidelines. James experience has covered a diverse range of jurisdictions, including most parts of Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Russia and the former CIS, New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

Career

Prior to joining Mayer Brown in 2012, James worked in the London and Moscow offices of another large international law firm, and was seconded to the emerging markets group of a major international bank. In addition to his native English, James is fluent in Russian. In 2014, Financial News included James in its "40 under 40 Rising Stars in Legal Services" list of "the brightest up-and-coming lawyers in European capital markets."

The dedicated three-partner DCM team has extensive US law capability in London. In an example of its strong flow of Canadian issuer work, the team acted on the update of Canada Pension Plan Investment Board's C$25bn global MTN programme and its issuance of $2bn in fixed rate notes. The practice also handled F√©d√©ration des caisses Desjardins du Qu√©bec's¬†‚ā¨7bn MTN programme.¬†Its work for blue-chip European corporates included a ‚ā¨600m notes offering by Novartis AG. Key to all three of these deals was¬†James Taylor, who is 'one of the best for Canadian covered bond issuance; he is knowledgeable, practical and transaction-oriented, and he adds real value'. He also plays a key role in the firm's emerging markets debt work, which included representing Turkey's Vakifbank in its invitation to holders of its $900m outstanding subordinated notes. He also advises¬†>issuers and underwriters on high-profile reverse Yankee bonds, which included acting for joint lead managers on a ‚ā¨600m offering by Whirlpool Corporation.¬†Bernd Bohr¬†is 'extremely precise, reliable and business-minded and has a very good knowledge of the industry'.¬†US and France qualified¬†Robert Flanigan¬†handles numerous deals in southern Europe. He advised Spain's Liberbank on its ‚ā¨300m inaugural bond issue.

Mayer Brown International LLP has 'deep knowledge in international construction law and FIDIC Contracts, and a lot of experience with international contracts and dispute resolution'. The firm has a strong mining practice that frequently handles complex deals in emerging markets, but it also prominent in transactions in the CEE region and Africa. The firm's structured finance and capital markets practices are also highly regarded and frequently handle matters in Turkey and the Middle East. Debt capital markets partner James Taylor recently advised Vakifbank on a $900m exchange offer for outstanding Tier 2 bonds. This was the first exchange offer ever initiated by a Turkish financial institution. Banking and finance partner and leading light Ian Coles is an expert on mining transactions. He acted for Société Générale, Investec and Ohridska Banka in the $75m financing of a lead and zinc mine in Macedonia. Rachel Speight is another mining specialist and her recent work included major projects in Latin America. Also recommended are infrastructure partner Tom Eldridge  and Raid Abu-Manneh, who is 'a brilliant attorney - his skills in analysing technically complex matters are superb'. The firm's rising stars include Doye Balogun and Danuta De Vries. Trevor Wood joined Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP.
