Practice head Eugenio Hernández-Bretón has longstanding experience acting as counsel as well as an arbitrator; together with Maria Eugenia Salazar, he is representing Longreef in its $80m investment arbitration proceedings against the Venezuelan government regarding its expropriation. Energy and natural resources

Baker & McKenzie, S.C. was the first international firm to enter Venezuela over 50 years ago and is deeply experienced in handling commercial and regulatory compliance matters for national and foreign oil-and-gas companies. Eugenio Hernández-Bretón leads the team, with his recent matters including advice to Total and Statoil on various regulatory issues. Other work included assisting Repsol with aspects of the new Constitutional Law on Foreign Investments. Maria Eugenia Salazar counseled Nabors on financial issues and foreign investment.   • The New Turkish Code of Obligations: Important Changes for Leases of Residential & Business Premises

    For decades, the primary Turkish laws governing leases of residential and business premises have been the Law on Leasing Real Property dated May 27, 1955 (the “Lease Law”) and the Turkish Code of Obligations No. 818 dated April 22, 1926 (the “Obligations Code”). Both of these laws, however, will be repealed and replaced with the new Turkish Code of Obligations No. 6098 dated January 11, 2011 (the “New Obligations Code”), which will enter into force on July 7, 2012.
