Areas of practice

Aviation and shipping: the firm possesses one of the strongest shipping practices including both contentious and non-contentious matters. In 2015 the firm acted in 12 admiralty lawsuits. It represents the biggest airlines and major aircraft leasing companies including both ILFC and GE Capital. Recent transactions include wet leasing by Air Atlanta in Biman.

Banking and finance: the firm offers true banking and finance expertise complemented by strong security documentation capabilities. The banking regulatory platform of Bangladesh was finalised by D&D partners under FSRP project. Completed FX transactions for RBS, JP Morgan and Merrill Lynch. Finance clients include IFC, ADB, EIB, IDB, Finnfund, DEG, DFID, CEXIM, ICBC, China Development Bank etc. Advised ICD in extending five Islamic finance facilities. Currently acting for IFC in its financing of the first regasification terminal in Bangladesh.

Investment, M&A and corporate: D&D offers market leading practice under this area. Major restructure clients include Nokia, LG, GE etc. Having strong capital market expertise, D&D represents all major institutional investors including Morgan Stanley, CitiGroup, CLSA, Credit Suisse and ABN Amro. M&A clients include Microsoft, GSK, Huawei, Lafarge, Holcim, AES etc.

Dispute resolution (arbitration and litigation): complemented by a strong litigation practice, D&D offers effective dispute resolution capabilities. It has worked in two large volume litigations for Cargill and Intelsat, and is retained by the insurance company in the Niko blowout litigations and arbitrations. The firm is also conducting an ICC arbitration for Gulf Air and another arbitration for Microsoft. The firm acted in two of the largest anti-dumping suits in US courts.

Infrastructure and construction: the firm has extensive experience in all kinds of infrastructure procedings. After acting for the construction/river training contractors of Jamuna Bridge, the firm is now acting on the Padma Bridge project for Sinohydro. It is also representing China Railway for the First Elevated Expressway Project and the Excelarate Energy in Maheshkhali Regasification Terminal.

Intellectual property: D&D’s IP practice is regarded as the strongest, offering both protection and enforcement services for trademarks, patents, designs and copyrights. It implemented the concept of a well known mark for Nokia in Bangladesh. The firm also possesses big scale enforcement capabilities established while working for Sony against over 200 counterfeiters in Bangladesh.

Power and energy: the firm possesses unparalleled expertise in power and energy sector including mining and exploration. It has structured 24 projects for clients like CMEC, Hetat, El Paso, SNPC, Isolux, Abener etc. Financing clients include OPIC, IDB, ICICI and M&A clients include AES, El Paso etc. Finalised the gas exploration contract involving Weatherford and Chevron. Also working for ONGC/OIL for its PSC contract for exploration of hydrocarbon at the Bay of Bengal.

Taxation and employment: these are integral parts of D&D’s corporate practice representing clients from tribunal to appellate division of Supreme Court. It is working in a constitutional writ for MAS and UPS. The firm successfully represented El Paso for a tax exemption. With in depth employment practice the firm has just completed a pension fund creation for Children’s Place.

Telecommunication: telecommunication practice at D&D is one of the finest. It is working for SPI on procurement and launching of the first satellite for Bangladesh. It also worked with NERA on the auction of 3G licences. Concurrent major projects include setting up a global mobile banking platform for Belgacom. M&A clients include Huawei and Vimpelcom.
