Since appointment as judge in 1990, Mr. Wu Cheol Song has served as judge for different courts, Director of Judicial Research for the Supreme Court Library of Korea, Inspector General for Judicial Ethics for the National Court Administration, senior judge for the Seoul Central District Court and for the Daejon High Court, senior and chief research judge for the Supreme Court, and finally senior judge for the Seoul High Court/chief senior judge for the Seoul Administrative Court. After leaving the courts, he joined Bae, Kim & Lee LLC in October 2013 as partner. While serving as judge for 23 years and 6 months, Mr. Song has built up expertise and experience handling cases in various areas, including general civil and criminal cases, intellectual property (IP) cases as judge dedicated to IP cases at the Seoul High Court and as chief sernior judge for the Seoul Administrative Court, and administrative cases. He also studied the US federal income tax law and corporate tax law at Berkly University and sentencing guidlines at the National Center for State Courts. As senior and chief reaserch judges for the Supreme Court for 3 years, among other things, he has gained ample research experience in appeal cases.

Bae, Kim & Lee LLC’s strength in handling complex litigation is demonstrated through successful wins for Korail in a dispute on private investor liability in the suspension of a PPP development project. In cross-border disputes, Dong-Su Lee and Gun Chul Do are advising Malaysian company Berjaya, on a $350m damages claim filed against Jeju Free International Development for breach of a land sale and purchase agreement in connection to the failed joint venture to develop a tourist resort on Jeju Island. Elsewhere, Wu Cheol Song and Tae Joon Park are representing Samsung Medical Center against patients seeking damages for being infected by Middle East respiratory syndrome. Also of note, Byoung Ha Jeon focuses on real estate, construction and financial litigation, while cross-border expert Tony Dongwook Kang is active in corporate governance.

Bae, Kim & Lee LLC’s tax group is particularly strong in disputes, appeals and customs matters. Key figures include practice head Wu Cheol Song, Cheol Hyung Yu and Il Young Cho, who recently acted for SK E&C, securing the dismissal of approximately $12.7m worth of VAT levied on the company. Seung-Wan Chae has advised Philip Morris Korea on a range of tax matters relating to the launch of new IQOS products. Other key cases include a successful Supreme Court appeal dismissing the tax authority's demand for $5.7bn worth of VAT imposed on KORAIL. Elsewhere, Tae Kyoon Kim, Hakrae Cho and senior foreign attorney Maria Chang advised Unilever on its acquisition of Carver Korea.
