Career

Woochul Hwang is a senior foreign attorney and an international arbitration specialist in complex and high-value disputes arising from commercial and investment transactions, notably post-M&A, joint venture and shareholder disputes. He also regularly advises on multinational clients’ cross-border investigatory and regulatory matters. Ranked as a leading individual in key directories, Mr. Hwang is sought-after for his advocacy skills and “superb capability in the analysis and assessment of cases” (Chambers and Partners 2020).

Prior to joining Kim & Chang, following an apprenticeship assisting the academic research and arbitration practice of renowned international arbitrator Professor William W. “Rusty” Park of Boston University School of Law, Mr. Hwang was a key member and partner of Bae, Kim & Lee’s international arbitration/litigation team. He is a co-author of the first English treatise on international arbitration in Korea and of its Korean counterpart.

A scholar of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affair’s Overseas Koreans Foundation, he holds a B.A. from Korea University and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law, as well as commendations from the Republic of Korea Army and the United States Army for his military service as the interpreter for the Executive Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff of Military Intelligence at the United Nations/ROK-US Combined Forces Command in Seoul. Educated at the American International School of Guatemala from the age of six through high school, he has a multicultural intuition and is trilingual, commanding native proficiency in Korean, English and Spanish.
