Career

Sung-Joo Kim is an attorney at Kim & Chang. He practices primarily in labor & employment, corporate investigations & white collar criminal defense and anti-corruption & corporate compliance practices.

Prior to joining Kim & Chang in 2020, Mr. Kim served as a public prosecutor for 18 years. Throughout his career, he engaged in investigations, prosecutions and trials of various criminal cases concerning especially labor and employment issues (including illegal strikes, unfair labor practices and industrial accidents at major businesses). As a result, he was named the Certified Prosecutor Specializing in Labor and Employment in 2015. Mr. Kim also has extensive experience in cases relating to election, political funding and illegal assembly.

While working as a constitutional researcher for two and a half years at the Constitutional Court, Mr. Kim prepared research reports on adjudication on the constitutionality of statutes and constitutional complaint.

He also served as a prosecutor researcher at the Public Security Department of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office. As a prosecutor researcher, he participated in the publication of Manual of the Industrial Safety and Health Act, Manual on the Penalties for Labor Laws, Manual on the Penalties in the Public Official Election Act and Manual on the Penalties in the Political Fund Act. Through this experience, he acquired a deep understanding of the relevant fields.

Mr. Kim received his LL.B. from Seoul National University College of Law in 1998, and graduated the Judicial Research and Training Institute of the Supreme Court of Korea in 2002. He is admitted to the Korean bar.
