Acting for family businesses, private banks and high-net-worth individuals, the department has been particularly busy with complex tax litigation throughout 2017 and 2018. Panya Sittisakonsin is representing a client in litigation concerning duty reduction privileges with respect to Thai law and certain free trade agreements. On the transactional side, Aek Tantisattamo and Wittaya Luengsukcharoen recently advised a Thai company on the tax aspects of the acquisition and development of real estate in Japan, and Nopporn Charoenkitraj and Thananan Sangnuan assisted a financial institution with the tax aspects of a potential share acquisition. Kitipong Urapeepatanapong heads the tax group and also leads the financial services department.

With a focus on high-end, sophisticated tax work, highly regarded boutique LawAlliance Limited receives instructions from a varied client base that includes domestic and foreign companies. In 2017 and 2018, the team was particularly busy advising on the tax aspects of M&A and other corporate transactions, and also achieved success in a number of tax disputes. Drawing on over 30 years of experience, Piphob Veraphong’s expertise spans domestic and international tax planning, securities transactions, transfer pricing issues and customs. Tax work is also handled by managing director Thanasak Chanyapoon, who has sector specialisms in real estate, transport, and hotels and hospitality. Recent highlights included Chanyapoon and Veraphong advising two companies in the aviation sector on a complex tax matter concerning VAT and specific business tax (SBT) exemptions. The team also benefits from a number of experienced associates, including Prangtip Anantavipat, who has developed notable expertise in tax disputes, and Rachanee Prasongprasit, who speaks English, Thai and Japanese.

The tax group at Tilleke & Gibbins provides 'an excellent level of service’ in tax litigation and non-contentious advisory work. The firm's busy corporate and M&A department relies on the tax team for assistance with the tax aspects of corporate transactions, including energy and infrastructure project development. Recent highlights include advising an architecture firm on certain tax issues connected with a major development planned in Bangkok, and, separately, advising a longstanding client in the manufacturing sector on the tax implications of its contracts with property funds and a state enterprise. Piyanuj Ratprasatporn is noted for her 'very efficient and professional’ approach, and Sriwan Puapondh has 'amazing knowledge and experience of tax matters’. Acting for European investors, the firm also has experience in FDI, where the tax team provides advice on all related taxation issues. Apart from investors, the group regularly advises importers and exporters, including those engaged in the automotive, energy and mining sectors. In recent work, Mingmongkolmitr, senior associate Isarapa Leeratanasiri and associate Werinorn Manphan advised a logistics company on tax planning and licensing in relation to its delivery service business, and also represented an automotive company in discussions with the Thai Customs Department regarding incorrect import tariff declarations. Much of the department's work is in the context of larger corporate or infrastructure transactions, where recent highlights included advising Royal Dutch Shell on the tax aspects of its sale of a 22.2% stake in the Bongkot gas field to PTTEP. Elsewhere, it advised a Canadian client entering Thailand on Thai company structuring, Board of Investment (BOI) incentive applications and other taxation issues; Jonathan Blaine took a key role on the abovementioned transactions. Also recommended is regional tax practice head Jack Sheehan, who advises on international taxation, tax disputes and inbound and outbound investments from his base in Laos.

Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP’s tax team handles a range of transactional and non-transactional tax issues for its clients, which span the energy, infrastructure, TMT and transport sectors, among others. Transfer pricing, double taxation agreements and customs liabilities fall within the scope of the group's expertise, while on the contentious side, it has experience with tax and customs audits and litigation.
