Media and entertainment is a difficult area to define, with the fall of traditional avenues such as music disputes meaning that the area is often synonymous with IP, defamation and even sport law. Contractual disputes make up a large body of cases, concerning the music, broadcasting, and traditional as well as online print industries. Theatre and gambling cases make up a lesser, but active proportion of work. As digital streaming has increased in popularity, PRS rights and royalties disputes have continued to arise concerning songs released in the 1970s to the 1990s. Media and entertainment cases are increasingly being heard at the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC), which has particularly helped smaller businesses and provides juniors with valuable court experience.

With β€˜a fantastic range of talent to suit any case’, Blackstone Chambers has β€˜the cleverest barristers in Britain’ and clerks who are β€˜amazing to deal with’. The set frequently undertakes media cases, with several members currently involved in a judicial review of a Gibraltar-based gambling business in the UK.

5RB’s strength in defamation disputes supplements its media and entertainment practice, and so is praised as β€˜one of the go-to chambers for defamation and media law work’. The set has particular expertise in injunctions and traditional print disputes.

8 New Square regularly handles a wide scope of media and entertainment cases with an IP element, particularly in the broadcasting sector. John Baldwin QC recently appeared in a breach of confidence case concerning the format of a television show that focused on singer-songwriters.

Known for IP and media work, 11 South Square houses β€˜very strong individuals’. In 2015, members handled several music contract cases and copyright infringement disputes for film companies.

Hogarth Chambers has β€˜exceptional standards at every level of call’ and β€˜a reasonable approach to fees’. The set is lauded for its commercial approach and expertise in performing rights and IP cases.

Matrix Chambers is β€˜increasingly strong in the field of media litigation’, and has an β€˜unrivalled’ presence in where media meets crime, according to clients. Members act for several television companies and traditional print clients, among others.
