Roschier advised Konecranes on the €1.1bn acquisition of part of Terex Corporation in a planned inversion transaction. Practice head Mika Ohtonen acted for YIT Corporation on the structuring of its combination with Lemminkäinen. The tax team was further strengthened by the arrival of taxation dispute expert Ossi Haapaniemi from Hannes Snellman.

The ‘outstanding’ tax practice at Borenius is ‘very efficient in its use of resources and excellent value for its fees’. It advised Madison Dearborn Partners on its $341m public takeover of Powerflute. Practice head Janne Juusela led the successful representation of Fortum in tax litigation. The ‘analytical and knowledgeable’ Heikki Wahlroos and Einari Karhu were appointed equity partners.

Hannes Snellman was instructed by Lemminkäinen on the tax structuring of its €1.6bn statutory merger with YIT. It also successfully defended a Finnish employer against the tax authority’s application of progressive earned income tax rates to earnout payments. Heikki Vesikansa heads the practice following Ossi Haapaniemi’s departure to Roschier.

The team at KPMG Finland, which operates across three offices in Finland, has extensive tax knowledge and successfully represented Henley Business School before the Supreme Administrative Court in a dispute regarding the exemption of particular university degrees from VAT. Juha Sääskilahti heads the practice.

Bird & Bird’s ‘customer-oriented’ team combines ‘high-level business knowledge, with value for money’. The practice advised the European Investment Fund and Epiqus on the taxation of foreign investments. It also represents UBS, Credit Suisse, Danske Bank and their clients in tax disputes. Practice head Sami Tuominen is praised for his ‘straightforward, business-oriented approach’.

Castrén & Snellman has expertise in providing integrated tax and corporate advice. The team, led by Sari Laaksonen, provided tax advice to DNA on its €50m IPO and €424.3m secondary sale of shares. It also acted for OP Financial Group on its €45m acquisition of Aitio Business Park comprising two real estate companies.

Dittmar & Indrenius provides ‘excellent service’ and ‘good value for money’. It advised CapMan on tax and structuring matters relating to its acquisition of Forenom. The practice also handles tax litigation. ‘Solution-oriented’ team head Kai Holkeri is recommended for his ‘ability to deconstruct complicated tax issues’.

The tax group at Krogerus advised on AXA Investment Managers’ €65m acquisition of a portfolio of care properties. Head of tax Antti Lehtimaja acted for Danske Bank on its extensive cross-border restructuring. Counsel Jouni Weckström is an ‘excellent tax litigator’ and is recommended for expertise in EU tax law.

Waselius & Wist’s ‘strong department provides straightforward tax advice’ and has ‘thorough capability in tax litigation’. The practice advised HiQ International on the tax aspects of its acquisition of the digital design group Great Apes. The ‘responsive, commercially aware and very knowledgeable’ Niklas Thibblin heads the practice.
