The ‘excellent’ employment practice at Baker McKenzie distinguishes itself through its ‘deep knowledge of Argentinean employment trends’ and its ‘strong English language skills, which are crucial on some multi-jurisdictional transactions’. Department head Carlos Dodds is ‘extremely experienced’ and enjoys a strong profile for cross-border matters; he recently advised a multinational client on the termination of a local board member. Daniel Orlansky is also highlighted for his ‘very good service levels’ and assisted a US-based corporation with a significant reduction in its workforce, and in the resultant conflicts between unions and employees. It also packs a punch in litigation; notably, it represented over 300 clients in 2000 new claims before the labour courts over the past year. Founding partner Daniel Funes de Rioja is a ‘go-to specialist for labour law’ and spearheads a ‘deep and broad group’, which also draws upon the senior expertise of collective bargaining expert Eduardo Viñales and international labour and employment partner Ignacio Funes de Rioja. Marval, O'Farrell & Mairal sets itself apart through its ‘deep resources’ and ‘comprehensive complementary service lines’. Its far-reaching employment offering is also a big draw for clients; although the group is particularly recognised for its litigation prowess, it also has expertise in transactional support issues, collective bargaining and consultancy matters. Firm managing partner Javier Patrón heads the department and assisted Loma Negra with the amendment of its compensation structure and on the launching of a phantom stock incentive plan. The ‘very experiencedEnrique Stile is another senior figure in the team and advised Nike on the termination of its regional CEO and two directors. Diego Kelly has established a reputation as an ‘up-and-coming partner’ and advised Amazon on the employment and labour aspects of the launch of its cloud business in Argentina. Rodrigo Solá Torino is also a key contact and represented Dufry in salary negotiations with two unions, namely the APA (Association of Aeronautical Personnel) and UPSA (the Union of Commercial Airline Senior and Professional Personnel).

Longstanding clients of Beccar Varela attest to the employment group’s ‘quick response times’ and ‘in-depth knowledge of Argentina’s complex labour market’ – the group’s ‘very good price-to-quality ratio’ is also a recurring theme. Other key names include Mauricio Mallach Barouille (‘great understanding of corporate needs’) and senior associate Jorge Pico (‘very professional, efficient and responsive’). Dedicated labour and employment boutique Rodríguez, Mancini, Arias & Asociados enjoys a strong profile in the market due to the eminent reputations of its founding partners: seasoned employment specialist Jorge Rodríguez Mancini is regarded by many as a ‘reference in the market’, while Juan Manuel Arias is singled out as a ‘leading expert in his field’. The firm, which acts for both employees and employers in labour matters, is particularly well known for its record in contentious work – it also handles collective bargaining and transactional support matters.

Niche labour and employment firm Adrogué Marqués Zabala & Asociados is widely respected for its strong track record in collective bargaining issues. The firm also advises on the hiring and termination of employees, employee benefit schemes and employment litigation. Javier Adrogué, who is very strong in the corporate counselling area, and José Antonio Zabala are the key contacts. In 2017, associate Pablo Vázquez left to join Zang, Bergel & Viñes Abogados.

Balado Bevilacqua Abogados’ ‘business-oriented approach’ and ‘strong ability to find creative solutions’ finds favour with clients, who assert that the firm is ‘unique for its strongly personalised service’. Lawyers are particularly valued for their ‘up-to-date knowledge of the market’ and ability to provide ‘new perspectives on complex matters’, with firm founder Mercedes Balado Bevilacqua highlighted as ‘one of the best labour lawyers in Argentina’. Brons & Salas houses a broad employment and labour practice, which is well known for its strong skill-set in collective bargaining agreements. The group also leverages the firm’s wider full-service offering to provide advice in relation to corporate transactions, immigration issues and contentious matters. Javier Verstegen, who is highlighted for his ‘very good negotiation skills’, heads the team and experienced associate Jimena Fariña provides capable support.

At Bruchou, Fernández Madero & Lombardi, Nilo Thomas is held up as an ‘impeccable partner’ and a ‘strong specialist in employment law’. Thomas heads a one-partner practice that draws upon an impressive band of senior associates, including Lucila Tagliaferro and ‘future star’ Geraldine Moffat. Highlights included advising LafargeHolcim on several recent matters, including union negotiations and administrative and judicial claims. Bulló Abogados’ employment group, which is particularly active in advising employers operating in the financial services and TMT sectors, handles a wide range of collective bargaining, contract administration, employment litigation and compliance issues.

Department head Carlos Marín Rodríguez and key partner Marcelo Pérez are highlighted together as ‘practical and client-oriented specialists’. Recent mandates included advising Telefónica de Argentina on the renewal of its collective bargaining agreement. On the contentious side, it represented HSBC Bank Argentina in several judicial claims.

De Diego & Asociados’ exclusive focus on labour law translates into a sophisticated employment practice, which advises domestic and multinational corporations on collective bargaining agreements, reorganisations, transactional support matters and litigation. In 2017, the firm advised FENA (The Federation of Shipping Companies) on various issues, including collective bargaining agreements with maritime workers’ unions. Founding partner Julián de Diego is widely revered for his ‘phenomenal employment expertise’.

In 2018, M & M Bomchil significantly bolstered its practice with the hire of new group head Esteban Carcavallo, who formerly led the labour and employment department at Estudio Ortiz & Asociados. Over the past year, the team represented a string of major domestic and multinational clients on such issues as terminations, union negotiations, internal investigations and compliances matters. Highlights included advising PepsiCo de Argentina on closing an establishment in Argentina and termination strategy. The group also includes sector expert Federico Basile and counsel Edgardo Isola.

Pérez Alati, Grondona, Benites & Arntsen’s practice has robust expertise in collective bargaining agreements, transactional support matters and employee benefits. Employment litigation is a notable sweet spot and the group successfully represented Robert Bosch in a termination dispute brought by five former employees. In another successful representation, it advised Google Argentina in a complex outsourcing case brought by a former employee of Atento Argentina. Julio Stefanoni Zani, Enrique Betemps and Julio Javier Lococo co-lead the department.

Knowledgeable, practical and available’, Alfaro-Abogados’ employment practice represents ‘very good value for money’. Sinopec is a key client and the firm advises the China-headquartered oil and gas giant on collective negotiations and conflicts, among other matters. Group head Carlos Miguez impresses with his ‘practical no-nonsense approach’ and ability to ‘go above and beyond to resolve potentially conflictive situations’.

Nicolás Grandi’s team at Allende & Brea is a popular choice for employers in the financial services and energy sectors, with Assicurazioni Generali, MasterCard International and Wells Fargo Bank among its key clients. The department, which strikes a good balance between transactional and contentious work, recently advised a local insurance company in labour litigation brought by former employees of another insurance company following a share transaction between the two companies.

Allende & Ferrante acts on a steady stream of consultancy and compliance matters; it also has sound experience in restructurings, collective bargaining and employment litigation. Employment and labour specialist Gustavo Ferrante is highly regarded for his senior expertise. Associate María del Rosario Pinto is also a key contact.

Beretta Godoy acts for a diverse portfolio of multinational clients, with strong showings in the energy and natural resources, infrastructure and life sciences areas. The practice, which is led by Joaquín Carrillo, recently assisted China’s Hexing Electrical with a restructuring process following its acquisition of Tecno Staff. Other representative clients include Allergan Productos Farmacéutico, MFC Resources and Transportes Malvinas.

At Estudio O'Farrell, lawyers impress with their ‘strong availability’ and ‘great quality advice’. José Luis Zapata leads a team that also includes ‘very clear and assertive’ senior associate Ignacio Agustín Castiglione. Key highlights included advising Vossloh Cogifer Argentina on its collective bargaining agreement with the main railway union, Unión Ferroviaria. Ford Argentina also turned to the group to assist with negotiations with automotive industry workers’ union, SMATA.

The team at Estudio Ortiz & Asociados is noted for its wide-ranging expertise, which takes in collective bargaining, corporate support matters, employee benefits and employment disputes. Juan Pablo Rovira Escalante is the key contact for a group that has handled work for the Argentine Polo Association, IBM Argentina and Lend Lease (Argentina). However, former practice head Esteban Carcavallo left to join M & M Bomchil in early 2018.

Wiener Soto Caparrós’ ‘excellent team’ secures strong praise for its ‘very good level of response – both in terms of time and quality’. In 2017, practice head Gonzalo Soto represented APR Argentina in two significant lawsuits brought by a former executive and an expat for alleged wrongful termination and unregistered employment.

Zang, Bergel & Viñes Abogados recently handled several significant transactional support matters, for clients such as Austral Gold and Banco Hipotecario, and it also has considerable strength in employment contracts, collective bargaining issues and litigation.
