Career

Founding partner Christopher Hogan focuses his litigation practice on resolving complicated disputes for clients, primarily those in the energy industry. He has substantial experience in federal court, state court, and arbitration proceedings and has tried numerous cases as first chair, including jury trials and arbitration final hearings.

Since starting the firm, Chris has successfully represented major energy companies like Apache, BP, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, Devon, Mewbourne, and Ovintiv in disputes across Texas and the U.S. He has argued before the Texas Supreme Court and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and handled cutting-edge cases involving novel issues of oil and gas law. The Texas Oil and Gas Association has also hired Chris as lead counsel on multiple occasions when presenting amicus briefs to the Texas Supreme Courts and Courts of Appeals.

Chris’ practice niches include mineral rights disputes such as pooling and commingling, ownership, and royalty payment issues. He is a member of the Pattern Jury Charges – Oil and Gas Committee for the Texas Bar Association, the Chair of the Houston Bar Association Energy Law Section, an officer for the Oil, Gas & Energy Resources Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, and an officer for the Institute for Energy Law – Litigation and Dispute Practice Committee.

Chris has been recognized for his work by numerous organizations. He’s been named a Leading Lawyer in The Legal 500 US guide for Energy Litigation: Oil and Gas since 2023. Chambers has listed him as a Band 1 Oil and Gas Litigator since 2020. He has also received awards as a Bloomberg Law They’ve Got Next honoree, Houston Business Journal 40 under 40 honoree, Law360 Rising Star in Energy, Oil and Gas Investor Forty Under 40 Honoree, and a Texas Lawyer Rising Star.

Before opening Hogan Thompson Schuelke, Chris was a partner at Reynolds Frizzell LLP and an attorney at Susman Godfrey LLP. He received his law degree from Columbia University Law School in 2008 after which he clerked for the Honorable Jerry E. Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
