Based in New York, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP‘s Theodore Wells is handling a spate of disputes for Exxon, including claims brought under the Clean Water Act, alleging the company failed to take into account remote impact on climate change of discharges at one of its Boston terminals. He is also defending Exxon against suits filed by a number of state attorneys general, accusing it of violating consumer protection regulations by misrepresenting its climate science findings. Under Armour co-founder Kevin Plank relied on Wells to defend him in a securities fraud class action arising out of an SEC investigation; plaintiffs demanded a $4bn payout, but Wells was able to negotiate a $434m settlement in June 2024.
