The variable premium for underfunded pension plans is unchanged at $9 per $1,000 of unfunded vested benefits. The Act adds a new "termination premium" that is payable when a company transfers its underfunded pension plan to the PBGC ($1,250 per participant per year, payable for three years after plan termination). This new premium applies to terminations occurring on or after January 1, 2006.
