Germany: Introduction of a new digitalized procedure for applying for ID cards, passports, residence and work permits

Deutschland: Einführung eines neuen digitalisierten Verfahrens zur Beantragung von Personalausweisen, Reisepässen, Aufenthalts- und Arbeitserlaubnissen

Recent changes:

The date from which applicants can apply for their documents to be sent by post and PIN and deactivation information will be provided at the first application appointment, which will no longer be sent by post, has been postponed from November 1, 2024 to May 1, 2025.

In addition, from May 1, 2025, only digital biometric photos, which are now standard for ID documents in Germany, will be accepted for new document applications. Paper passport photos will no longer be accepted from this date.
