Intellectual Property - Trademarks - What May be Registered

A trademark is in the Trademark Act defined as a symbol that can be shown graphically and through which goods or services that are offered for sale or otherwise used in a company's business can be distingued from those of others. It is especially laid out in the law that a single word can be a trademark, this including personal names, and also figures, letters, numbers or the form of a specific goods or its cover.

In addition to trademarks and other service marks, collective marks (e.g. symbols used by members of a collective in their business or profession) and certification marks (e.g. symbols which certify a certain quality or certain characteristics of a product) may be registered.
