Summary

Ministers have set out a vision for the UK's technology strategy. The UK is to become a "tech superpower" by 2030. This will be achieved by creating "world-leading pro-innovation regulation" and influencing global technical standards.1

However, the former Information Commissioner has pointed out that this kind of "digital growth" will only be possible if individuals' are prepared to allow their personal data to be shared: personal data is the "energy" which powers new technologies.2 If the data protection regime in the UK provides insufficient levels of protection for personal data, then this will erode public trust and undermine Ministers' vision of the UK being a global leader in data-driven innovation.
