With an overwhelming majority of votes, new laws and regulations
will be formed, aiming road safety and a decrease in Cyprus'
high number of road deaths and serious injuries. From
1st October 2020, the penalties for violations of the
Traffic Code will alter and there will be an increase of incoming
fines for speeding, alcohol, reckless driving, helmet and seat
belt, and cell phone use while driving by drivers.
Based on the new amendments, the Court will have a legal right
to order a driving prevention, and thus direct a prompt trial, if
the driver exceeds driving speed, driving with an alcohol content
in the exhalation ratio and refusal or avoidance of the provision
of expiration sample. More specifically, there can be a rapid trial
in excess of 75% of the permitted speed limit, driving with an
alcohol ratio in the exhalation exceeding 70mg/100ml or 55mg/100ml
for young and professional drivers. More details relating to the
speed limits can be found on the table below.
