New EU Anti-Corruption Directive: What Businesses Need to Know
The Council of the European Union has formally adopted a landmark directive that will fundamentally reshape anti-corruption enforcement across the bloc. This new EU-wide law harmonises the definition of corruption offences and establishes uniform penalty thresholds, marking the most significant update to the EU’s anti-corruption framework in over two decades.
The directive replaces outdated legislation—specifically, the 2003 Framework Decision on corruption in the private sector and the 1997 Convention on corruption involving EU and member state officials—with a modernised regime aligned to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.
