Pictet Asset management considers itself a ‘flat’ organisation, with legal team members interacting on a day-to-day basis directly with both operational staff and senior management. The team of 15 lawyers, three paralegals and one assistant contains six heads of practice groups sharing the same seniority and reporting into general counsel Nicolas Tschopp. The wave of new regulations facing the asset management space is a major concern for legal teams in the sector, meaning Pictet’s lawyers are involved in many decisions made by the company, both in terms of its organisation and product offering. In order to maximise impact and help business anticipate regulatory change as much as possible, the team has streamlined its regulatory watch and is now run by a global committee (co-chaired by the general counsel and the head of public policy) that tracks regulatory developments, follows up on implementation and provides advice to all areas of the business. The team plans to expand the legal remit of the business. General counsel Nicolas Tschopp says, ‘We have created a new “head of” position for our international funds practice group and hired a senior lawyer from private practice’.
