About

SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) is Scandinavia’s leading airline with daily flights to destinations in Europe, the US and Asia. SAS is a member of Star Alliance and together with 26 partners offers more than 1,200 destinations around the world in over 193 countries. SAS has a centralised corporate legal function, where the legal department provides expert legal assistance with lawyers located in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo, dealing with complex matters such as passenger rights, M&As, data protection and airline specific matters. SAS’s legal department is headed by vice president and general counsel Marie Wohlfahrt, and its head of legal for Sweden is Anna Almén, supported by four counsel in her team. During the last two years, lawyers were appointed as legal business partners to different business units in SAS, ensuring the delivery of proactive, insightful and effective legal advice. The department has also been involved in a number of significant deals and transactions. For example, the team contributed to the negotiation and financing of new aircraft – Airbus A350 and A320neo, new issues of shares and bonds, the setting up of SAS Ireland and the Irish leasing platform, as well as the outsourcing of the CRJ900 platform to CityJet. The legal department also handled the appeal of the European Commission’s decision on the air cargo cartel case to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), and dealt with civil lawsuits from air cargo customers as a consequence of the European Commission’s decision. According to Wohlfahrt, her team is made up of ‘highly skillful, professional, experienced, pragmatic and service minded lawyers. This has been achieved through a thorough recruitment process, open and transparent leadership, a trusting atmosphere, belief in colleagues skill and judgement, and a happy mind’, she says.
