Hunt Oil Company of Peru

About

Hunt Oil Company of Peru is a wholly-owned, indirect subsidiary of Hunt Oil Company, a privately-held exploration and production company based in the US with worldwide operations. Hunt Oil Company of Peru is part of the Camisea Consortium and holds a 25.2% interest in the license contracts related to the largest natural gas producing fields in Peru, which include Block 88 and Block 56 in the Ucayali Basin. Praised by nominators for displaying ‘excellent teamwork’ and for being ‘business oriented, innovative and possessing excellent negotiation skills’, the Hunt Oil legal team is composed of a senior lawyer, a legal assistant and an executive assistant. The team has the aim to give a high-quality personalised legal service to the company’s daily activities linked to finance, commercial, environment, contractual, corporate and regulatory fields, as well as other important tasks within the company. Senior lawyer Jorge Arias heads the legal department and is praised by a number of his peers for his ‘solid experience in the oil and gas sector that allows him to daily manage various types of matters such as complex contracts, environmental issues, and financing operations that are critical for the success of the company’. Along with his multidisciplinary team, he is committed to assist and support in an effective and customised way to provide solutions and conduct respective actions. ‘The legal team of Hunt Oil is constantly looking for implementing preventive measures with the aim of avoiding possible contingencies, or indeed, measures that improve their processes’, says Arias. During 2018, the team has been involved in the successful issuance of bonds worth US$600m in international markets, under rules meeting the legal requirements for the transaction. The legal team has also participated in the successful negotiation with the Government of Peru – represented by Perupetro – for the awarding of three technical evaluation agreements related to each of Blocks 66, 67 and 68 located in the Ucayali Basin. In order to succeed in transactions of this nature, the legal team has made it a priority to not only understand the legal matters but also the needs of the business of the internal client, and has consequently changed its way of thinking in order to do so. ‘For example, thinking as engineers for technical and environmental matters or as commercial experts for negotiations of contracts, hence having that additional approach, the connection with the internal client will be even better with assertive results’, explains Arias.
