As the investment branch of the Government of Dubai with a mandate to manage the state’s assets, the Investment Corporation of Dubai calls on its legal team to work with a huge range of stakeholders. In spite of its broad responsibilities, the team, led by Susy Aryani Singgih, consists of just four members. The team’s response to the pressure of handling such a large workload with so few staff has been to diversify its skills and knowledge in a way that, as one nominator comments, ‘allows each lawyer to have the same impact as several lawyers in other organisations – they are able to punch above their weight without sacrificing anything in terms of rigour or quality.’ As a result, the team now handles work covering finance and investments, transportation, energy and industrial, real estate and construction, hospitality and leisure and retail sectors. One of the team’s more recent contributions to the company came with its impressive work on the acquisition of Porto Montenegro Marina and Resort, a deal which paved the way for a number of other proposed transactions such as the development of a 5 star hotel resort in Palm Jumeirah and the Deira Waterfront Development.
