As the leaders in the housing developer sector in Mexico, the legal department of Javer operates with high standards of teamwork consistent with the position of the company in the housing market in Mexico. The team is led by Oliverio de la Garza Ugarte, general counsel and corporate secretary, with 23 lawyers and three support staff within the team. Based in Monterrey and with regional offices in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancun, Queretaro and Aguascalientes, the group handles the company’s large and growing property portfolio and corporate governance. In the last two years the team developed and implemented a standardisation programme for all forms such as contracts, trust documents and others. It also launched an internal digital system for the request, creation, and review authorisation of legal documents and agreements. Ugarte identifies that, ‘this system also serves as a digital library that can be accessed by the company lawyers (corporate and regional) and some internal clients. In that library we can have access to corporate documents and legal reports. This system also measures the response time of the request received and provide activities reports’. The legal department has lead the implementation of an environmental policy in the company and contributed on new company values and ethics standards with high emphasis on social responsibility. In 2018, the team reviewed, negotiated and formalised the acquisition of 20 territorial reserves to develop approximately 25,000 houses in the coming years in the residential, medium and social segments. At the time of writing the company has 60 projects open and in progress in seven Mexican states.
