The Union Bank of India (UBI) law department supports one of the largest government owned banks in the country. The team is led by deputy general manager and chief law officer P R Rajagopal who has worked at the bank for 19 years. Combining the strength of lawyers from various specialisations, the team seamlessly handles all routine legal work and drives strategic initiatives aimed at expanding the bank’s presence in India and abroad. Two years ago UBI entered the UK market by opening a regional subsidiary, a process that presented complex regulatory challenges and required coordination of external lawyers. This year, the team has been a core element of UBI’s plans to expand nationwide, supporting the bank’s plans to open 200 branches in the central and western regions of the country.
